TfL Energy Audits: Hendon Central & Edgware Tube Stations
As part of our collaboration with Transport for London, What’s The Payback conducted detailed energy audits at both Hendon Central and Edgware Tube Stations. These assessments, completed under ESOS methodology, involved analysing half-hourly energy data, reviewing building systems, and identifying actionable efficiency opportunities.
Key Findings and Opportunities
At Hendon Central, a Grade II listed building, outdated controls and misconfigured HVAC systems contributed to unnecessary overnight energy use and poor seasonal performance. Our analysis identified low-cost optimisation measures, including lighting upgrades, smart VRV controls, and boiler scheduling, with potential annual carbon savings of 17,497 kgCO₂e.
Edgware Tube Station presented an even greater opportunity, poor gas heating controls and redundant AC units driving high base loads. Our recommendations—ranging from simple scheduling changes to the installation of smart thermostats and solar PV—could reduce energy use by over 1.37 million kWh per year, and saving 262,702 kgCO₂e in emissions. Many of these interventions offered immediate paybacks or required minimal investment.
Action and Impact
Both audits demonstrate how tailored energy strategies and control improvements can unlock significant cost and carbon savings, even in complex, 24/7 transport infrastructure. Using our payback platform, TfL can seamlessly explore supplier options and implement recommended technologies—paving the way for operational savings and long-term sustainability gains.
